Welcome to

CLUB NIGHTS    We meet every other Wednesday from September to June (7.45 - 10.30 p.m.) Each dance is walked through first and the Caller will then "call" instructions during the dance. There are different callers each time - sometimes a Club Member - who calls to ‘live’ music.

The following information has been prepared for our newer members to ease them into the splendid community that is called ENGLISH COUNTRY DANCING. It is an enjoyable and sociable activity that is growing in popularity. We hope you become part of it.

BACKGROUND    Country Dancing - sometimes called Barn Dancing or Folk Dancing - has been around for hundreds of years. Ever changing but with a great tradition. Dances can be simple and straightforward or complex - with much in between! Often newcomers feel hopelessly confused - even bemused! Rest assured EVERYONE goes through - or is going through - that stage. Stick with it and gradually it will start to make sense and you’ll enjoy the dances even more. Actually doing the dances is worth a thousand words describing them. However there is an excellent booklet, available through this Club entitled: "ELEMENTS OF ENGLISH COUNTRY DANCE"  [see also web page "Glossary of Terms"]  This booklet gives details of the history of English Country dancing and there are also explanations of those strange phrases given out by the Caller such as Hey, Flutter Wheels, Gipsy and Ladies Chain. Tips can also be gleaned about the quaint but necessary etiquette in country dancing. The booklet is all set out in an informative and easy-to-understand style - and it’s only £1.75.

Our own programme  [see also web page Frenchay FDC Dates] sets out dates/details of club dances and evenings while the Notice Board displays where and what is happening in the wider Folk community and the AVON VALLEY FOLK DANCE DIARY also provides a fund of information about other events in and around Bristol.

DANCING WEEKEND at Woolacombe

Each year the Club organises a dancing weekend away at a seaside resort. These weekends are great fun with great dancing and a great social atmosphere - not to be missed! There are also very popular Spring and Autumn dances.

With all the above events it must be expensive to join-not at all! The joining fee is £2.00 and Club nights cost just £1.00 (and this includes tea and biscuits). Great value!
